The cheese tour was informative and very much worth the stop alone. I highly suggest making a run into the cheese shop and trying the honey goat cheese ice cream. Absolutely to die for.
We also bought a little 'make your own cheese' kit that we saw the owner use in a video. Can't wait to try it!
I took the tour with my 10 yr old niece and we both loved it. It's not a huge place, it's nice and cozy and the cheese is fantastic! I highly recommend doing a tasting. It's fun and you can explore options before deciding on one type to get (I ended up getting 4 different flavors!). We had lunch in the shop and my 5 cheese sandwich was very tasty.
No trip to Elkmont is complete without a visit to Belle Chevre. They have the best spreadable cheeses anywhere and are always happy to let you sample before you buy. They have a small menu but anything they put out is delicious. They have fabulous handmade ice cream and the few flavors they make are worth two scoops they have a large parking lot behind the store.
If you are looking for a quick bite in a neat atmosphere I suggest checking this place out. The sandwiches are innovative and delicious and the cheeses are all excellent. I would have given 5 stars if there was a bit more selection but that's not the goal here. Here it seems that the plan is to do a few things very well as opposed to a lot of things just mediocre.
The cheese was pretty good but the service was not. We ordered a fondue plate. It came out cold with the tiniest candles lit under it, clearly for aesthetics. We asked for them to warm it by microwave or any means. It was Luke warm so whatever. Furthermore we ordered a sampler plate that come in two sizes the smaller was ordered as we had high hopes with the fondue. You get to sides with the plater, we chose strawberry jam and summer sausage to go with two portions of cheese and complementary bread. The jam was forgotten so we kindly reminded and they obliged likewise. We chose strawberry because my girlfriend didn't want the pepper jelly option. They failed to mention that all the jams were hot or jalapeño infused or they were lying and trying to make face. We left it at that.
I will definitely take the 2 hour drive again if I don't start seeing the cheese in my local grocery.
